Nutrition Guide

November 15, 2006

I’m posting this info. for Don who requested it, but it’s a good plan for anyone who’s got the desire to try. The P90X nutrition plan is as follows:

Phase I: Fat Shredder – Days 1-28
Phase II: Energy Booster – Days 29-56
Phase III: Endurance Maximizer – Days 57-90

Body Fat Range Targets
For Men: Fit – 14-17%  Athlete – 10-13%  Elite Athlete – 4-9%
For Women: Fit – 21-24%  Athlete – 16-20%  Elite Athlete – 12-15%
Measure Body Fat at start of program and at the end of each phase to measure progress

Determining Your Nutrition Level
1. Calculate your RMR
   Your Body Weight x 10 = RMR
2. Calculate your Daily Activity Burn
   RMR x 20% = DAB
3. Calculate your Energy Amount
   RMR + DAB = EA

Nutrition Level Chart
EA = 1800-2399 = Level I 1800 calories per day
EA = 2400-2999 = Level II 2400 calories per day
EA = 3000+ = Level III 3000 calories per day

Macronutrient Goals in Each Phase
Phase I – Protein 50%, Carbs 30%, Fat 20%
Phase II – Protein 40%, Carbs 40%, Fat 20%
Phase III – Protein 20%, Carbs 60%, Fat 20%

Customizing the Phases
Phase I – Can be extended if you feel you need to drop more body fat, but still have enough energy to do workouts. Can be shortened if your body fat is already low or you aren’t getting enough energy for workouts.
Phase II – Can be extended if you feel you are doing well in this phase and want to keep going.
Phase III – Optional phase for those who really want to push to the limit. It is recommended, however, that everyone try this phase at some point.

This is the bare bones of the plan. There was other stuff included which I do not have the time or space to add. What I listed here is the vital stuff and should be sufficient to do the plan properly. I’ve done it before, and it has worked along with the p90x workouts. Fair warning, though, for anyone who doesn’t like to track, measure, and manage every little thing that goes into their mouth. Cuz that’s what this plan is all about. Knowing what to eat, how much, and in what combinations. It also requires planning. But in the end it is worth it. Good luck.

Just wondering…When it says Level 1 Portions: does it mean all the portions in the list per each day?

Also the list of foods in each category (fats, proteins, carbs, fruit, veg)seems small. Is there foods missing or is this exactly what is written in the book?

    Thanks

  3. firetometal said

hey al. whatever phase you are in, the portions listed under your particular level are what you are to strive for each day. ideally, you should aim to get all the portions listed because it is geared to bring you out close to the desired calorie level. the foods that i listed are exactly what they put in the book. i imagine you can add to that as long as the foods are healthy and nutritional. you’ll just have to figure out for yourself what category to put each food in and how many calories per serving the food you are adding contains. the book also contains recipes but there is no way i’m going to list all of them. you can probably find some of them at p90x.com. good luck!

Thanks for replying !Another thing….when doing the workouts…what weights do you need in the dumbells? I have a set of 20lb weights. Do I need a lot below or above that weight?

  5. Al said

Oh yeah…one more. For the protein bar and recovery drink….is there a substitute for those or do you need to use them? Guess if you don’t use P90x ingredients you don’t get the right foods going in or just a money grab?

  6. firetometal said

on the workouts you will just have to try it out and see how it goes. i know the guys on the dvds use a lot of 30s and 40s, but they are pretty stout. i on the other hand, used anywhere from 8s to 20s, depending on the exercise. it’s all according to how strong you are. but i will say this, there are easier and harder weight exercises involved, so you probably will definitely need more than just one weight set.

i did not purchase or use either the recovery drink or the protein bars, and i did fine. i did not replace them with anything either. just ate real food 🙂 so no, i really don’t think they are necessary. but if you wish to replace them, i’m sure any store with a health section will carry similar products.

  7. Al said

Sorry to keep questioning…..did you lose weight/gain muscle?….if you don’t mind me asking….how much? did you go the whole 90 days?

  8. yes, i did do the entire 90 days. i definitely lost weight, though i don’t remember how much exactly. as for gaining muscle, i think i pretty much just maintained the muscle i had (i have been into weight training for several years off and on). the program is not meant to make you super beefed up or anything like that. so if you are looking for big muscle gain, p90x is not going to bring it. but if you haven’t ever lifted before, or if you are just looking to stay buff, then p90x should do just fine.

  9. Al said

Thats great….thanks for the replies….I’m going to start on monday, just getting geared up for it. Hope it doesn’t burn me out as I am not really a weight lifter but want to get into better shape.

Hi again….is there any chance of getting the P90X Fitness guide and the Nutrition guide scanned and online or emailed? or is there an actual PDF file? I’m getting a little frustrated on the meals and I believe it is quit a good guide.
    Thanks

  11. firetometal said

hey al. i pretty much listed the core of what is in the nutrition guide book. the only thing i left out were the recipes and the meal plans that they have mapped out if you don’t like to plan your own meals. to be honest, that is just too much to type, and i don’t really have time to type it all either. i believe you can get recipes off of p90x.com. check it out and see. as for the fitness guide…well, again too much to type. you are talking a dozen workouts, each with a few dozen different exercises in them. to list every exercise in every workout and the description of how to do them would be overly time consuming, and my fingers would probably fall off. i’m also not one to be emailing strangers or anything like that, so i hope you understand. best thing i can tell you is if you need anymore info, check out the forums at p90x.com or purchase the complete package from there. it is a little pricey, but it was worth it to me. good luck to you.

Hey Darrell. I wouldn’t waste your time on the Cardio-X DVD. I’ve seen it. Tony takes routines from the other DVD’s and then repeats certain sequences, but the first 20 minutes is Yoga. He does add a few new routines, but they’re simply designed to get you moving. For example, they do something I believe is called “Locomotive” where you stand with your hands behind your head. You then lift your right knee and bring your left elbow to the right knee (the knee and elbow move at the same time). You then do the other side. It’s kind of like doing cross crunches except you’re standing up. If you still “have to have it” then you could try ebay. I’ve seen a few P90X stuff for auction. Otherwise, you could do a light version of the Plyometrics or Kempo DVD. The Cardio DVD is only used in the lean and doubles version of the set anyway. If you plan to go through the regular routines (6 days straight with rest or stretch on the 7th day) then you won’t need the Cardio. Hope that helps.

You can find all the videos there without paying. You just have to wait about an hour to download each thing, unless you want to pay for the downloads. Use WinRAR to extract the files. Make sure you download all parts or else they won’t work. Or you can download them all from TorrentSpy.com type in beachbody in the search part and download P90X trackers online using BitComet.

i was wondering what the recovery drink is. is it an energy drink or a protein drink , something along those lines?

  20. krissy said

The recovery drink is something similar to endurox (widely available in stores)…a protein-type concoction that will keep you from being sore the day after your workouts.

Hi there, I’m not sure if you are still monitoring this website, but thank you so much for posting this info. Luckily it is not too far off a cleansing diet I’ve done, so I know I can do it 🙂 I’m presuming when it says “1 cup of pasta” or “one cup of oatmeal” it means 1 cup after cooking? Would you be able to let me know? Thanks again 😀

Hi everyone, I have been researching P90X for a while now and just received it in the mail the other day and can’t wait to start.

I am just wondering if someone had some information for the P90X protein bar and recovery drink. I was wondering what the calorie count was, and if there are some good substitutions I could use? (protein powder shakes)

Hello all, I have been doing the P90X program for 4 days now and I decided that I wanted to follow their meal plan. I find that I am getting really stuffed on these meals, should I cut the portions down so I don’t get so stuffed?

“Level II 2400 calories per day”
Is this my Calories intake that I need a day?

  25. Brad said

I am about to try P90X for the third time. My first few attempts failed after a few weeks. My wife and I cannot find the Nutrition Guide anywhere, so I was glad to find this website. People on Ebay are asking way too much for them.

For the people asking about the recovery drink, I just used Endurox instead. I believe Endurox has now been bought by Accelerade, though. You will find that you crave this “treat” after your workouts. I did Day 1 of P90X Lean yesterday (Core Synergistics) and immediately wanted my drink.

As far as weights, I have always used a set that ranges from 5lbs. to 15lbs. I wouldn’t mind having a 20lbs. and 25lbs., but I can wear myself out just fine without them. If you are starting out, you may even want to do a lot of the exercises without the weights just to work on your form. You will still get tired as hell.

  26. Brad said

Oh, we have the pull-up bar, but I really recommend buying some resistance bands (I have Xertubes) to simulate the pullups. The pullups have been a real frustration for me the first two times I tried the program. They are just seriously tough.

I’m gonna use the bands this time until that gets too easy. Once I get in better shape, I’ll start using my Door Gym.

I have a question. I got an P90X Classic Routine Workout Excel file that helps me track my progress for the work out. It calculates your EA for you. But differs from what you wrote. You have RMR+DAB=EA but the calculation set in excel is RMR+DAB+600=EA. Which would take me from a Level I to a Level II. I know there is a Classic, Doubles, and Lean versions of the workout and I did not know if there is difference on how you calculate your EA.

    Thanks

    Hi

I’m just starting the meal plans and in phase 1. When you list the numbers 5,2, 1, 1… For proteins, fruits, etc.. What does that mean? Also why are we increasing calories as time progress?

  44. I was considering getting the P90x system, and was doing some research on it. I was curious what their marketing back-end was, and now I see that they make a small fortune off of their “Recovery Bars” and “Protein Drinks”. I wonder if you have to follow the diet, including their supplements in order to get qualify for their refund if you don’t like their videos.

    Do the videos really work?

I am at a nutrition level III and I noticed these past couple days since I started P90X, that I am extremely full after each meal. I am eating more food now than I used to, but I guess the difference is, it’s healthier food. My question is, should I follow the nutrition guide as far portion size is concerned? Would reducing the portion size result in less energy? Or would reducing the portion sizes help me loose weight faster? Since my nutrition level is III, what would happen if I eat at a level II or level I? My goal is to loose weight and get tone. I don’t want to bulk up, but I would like definition. Thanks in advance for any advice!

  51. Lauren said

In reguards to calculating your level, you do need to add 600 (according to the nutrition plan). This accounts for the estimated 600 calories burned each day by doing to p90x work outs.

    Determining Your Nutrition Level
    1. Calculate your RMR
    Your Body Weight x 10 = RMR
    2. Calculate your Daily Activity Burn
    RMR x 20% = DAB
    3. Calculate your Energy Amount
    RMR + DAB +600 = EA

Hey! I’ve been doing home workouts for months now and need a newer and more challenging workout and finally got P90X, which should be arriving anytime now. Does anyone who has done it or is currently well into the 90 day workout know what level of fitness you need to be at when beginning? I took the test on the P90x workout and only had difficulty with pull-ups. How many inches or lbs did you lose? Any comments are welcomed.

I also actually read the real study supporting this, not just this news article.

  137. Kent said

Misty, you don’t need the pull up bar. If you go to your sporting goods store and find a set of good resistance bands you can use those instead of the bar. They show you how to use them in the videos. That’s what I’m using and they’re much cheaper than buying weights and buying the pull up bar. I found a good set at Dick’s Sporting goods for $35.

I don’t understand why you all keep asking for a meal plan or nurtion guide. Scroll to the top. That’s it in a nut shell. Get your EA by using the formula (rembember to add 600 to your EA. Find your Level with the table that sounds the EA limits. Then Phase I (your Level) that how many foods you eat. You put your own meal together from the foods listed or make your meal comparable. After 1 month go to phase II and so on…If you feel confortable in a Phase stay in it a week longer… This person has broken this down very well. Just changing your eating habits like this will help you then throw on a cd and make your own muscle confusion…..It works!! The whole system is worth the money…..

I can’t believe I am the first nutritionist (and endurance athlete) to comment on this product. There are many problems with it-eating this way is protein overdose…have your protein excretion (nitrogen balance)checked and you will see why the scientific research supports .8-1.2 grams of protein PER KILOGRAM of bodyweight per day (not 1 gram per pound). No study has shown anyone to utilize the amount of protein listed in this diet program.

I was wondering if anyone else had a comment about what Cherie said on Sept. 6th, 2009 up above about the protein intake in the nutrition plan? She said she was a nutritionist and endurance athlete and that there are many problems with this plan. She states some figures there and I don’t understand that sort of thing but was wondering if anyone else does and whether she is right or wrong. I have researched this product and find it hard to believe that they would get something like that wrong. How far off is she talking? I plan on following it anyway.

  182. Jeremy said

    Waylon,

Cherie is using figures I have not seen before. As a general rule when attempting to lose weight without the loss of muscle mass .75-1.5g of protein per POUND is suggested. That stated, endurance athletes do need a higher percentage of carbohydrates than someone who is trying to change the appearance of their body. Suggested food guide pyramids say only 10% of your calories should come from protein. Perhaps this is what she is refering to? Anyways, as a general rule .5g of protein per pound is the minimum you want to consume if you’re trying to lose weight. Muscle burns fat and protein (specifically the amino acids BCAA’s) are the foundation for muscle in the body.

I see a lot of post about the bar and drink. If you go to any store like GNC or even walmart, you should be able to get a protein powder. Basically the protein will help make your “new muscles” stick while recovering you from your workout. Normally they have protein and you can choose whether to take it pre or post workout or both. GNC is about 60 dollars for two weeks of protein once a day and tastes very good. And walmart is about 25 for two weeks and tastes like chalk lol so if its about money go to walmart. Hope this helps.

Stupid question, but I haven’t seen it covered here. We’re getting the P90X but it hasn’t arrived yet.

*When* do you eat in relation to exercising?

For instance, right now my husband and I go to the gym about 8:30 most mornings and work out. He’s focusing on cardio, and I’m doing Nautilus along with mat work like core and yoga. We usually get home around 10:30-11 as he has to leave for work at 11:30.

Right now, I’m having a fruit and greens smoothie as soon as I get up around 7-7:30 (I’m diabetic and have to eat). Maybe 12 ounces worth. Then when we get back, we both have a banana, EmergenC and I also have some whey protein. The rest of the day is normal mealtimes.

How much time are you supposed to allow between eating a regular meal and doing the dvds? What if I want to do the doubles? We’re planning to transfer the dvds to Ipod so we can take them with us. We find we’re more motivated if we go to the gym.

    Thanks.

The calculations aren’t right. According to the P90X nutrition guide that comes with the program, there’s an additional 600 that has to be added to the formula for figuring out how many calories you need in a day. That’s a significant oversight since it pushes some people from the level one eating to the level two eating and so on. Better double-check that. So it’s your RMR + Daily Activity Burn + 600 and THEN that’s your energy amount or calories needed per day.

    thank you

  286. fletchs said

You definitely must have the chin-up bar. As for weights, it depends on you. Are you going for toning and losing weight or trying to bulk up? If you are mostly interested in toning / losing, the bands may actually be a good solution. All bands are not equal. The box store bands will wear out and become useless fairly quickly. If you are trying to bulk, you may need dumbells up to 50 lbs or so. I recommend getting adjustable dumbells. That is cheaper than buying a complete set of individual dumbells. Make sure you get some that go to at least 50. I am a Beachbody coach and have these items available through my website: http://4realfitnessonline.com. You can also sign up for a free beachbody membership on my site. That will get you access to the forums (great info there), and I would become your beachbody coach to help answer any questions and keep you motivated. Good luck on your fitness journey, however you pursue it! Decide, Commit, Succeed.

I have just started day 1 of week 12 this has been the best thing that has ever happened to me with the exception that I only lost 10 lbs, probably because I did not have the nutrition guide or the meal planner. I tried to order the NG but Beachbody would not sell the guide because I did buy the dvd from them, I bought them from I am not sure where china because they were only $69.00 they were supposed to come with the books but they did not. they phone number was long distance and I did not want to get caught in some kind of scam. Next week when I finish week 13 I will take a couple days break then i might start P90X lean or possibly doubles.

Thinking about the p90x program. ? In the fat shredder phase 1 portion plan.the portion servings do not add up 2 1800 calories a day.
For example the protein part will be 5 servings at 100 calories each serving but wouldn’t that be 500 calories of protein for the day
